It’s a great question. 90% of the time we’re talking about presence in a specific area. For example, if you’re a real estate lawyer and your office is in Vaughan, you definitely want to be the #1 suggestion for the keyword “real estate lawyer Vaughan” and all the “real estate lawyers near me” kind of searches from Vaughan as well. Real estate lawyer Toronto would be considered local SEO as well, since you don’t want to be the first suggestion for people in BC that won’t drive to you, even if you’re first by the “real estate lawyer in Canada” kind of keywords. Area-wise, it all starts (and peaks) at about a radius of 3-4 km, and up to 15 km for well-established businesses.

Yes, it definitely IS possible. Proximity is at the core of local SEO and Google’s suggestions, but it’s not the only factor. If you have a stronger local SEO optimization than 10 businesses that are closer to the client (but don’t bother with local SEO as much), you’re going to be suggested first — despite being not the closest option physically. 

That’s its sole purpose: to be the point of contact. So, the answer is — definitely yes. Your GMB profile not just can, but SHOULD work for you. If it’s on us, we’ll make it do just that, by tweaking and optimising all the 40+ parameters it allows to change. 

Yes, you can, and you can rank great. It’s not the fact of a bad review that matters, but the ratio of negative and positive reviews. Google knows perfectly well that sometimes, people are not quite just in their reviews, and far from being objective. If you have more positive reviews, answer — and it’s crucial — to all of them, and have an overall positive rating, you can rank perfectly well in Google’s top-3 suggestions for your desired local search keyword. 

Generally — yes, it makes your site bigger and more reputable-looking, but it 100% depends on a whole set of factors. Before deciding whether you need a dedicated location page for an area, we’ll take a look at your competition, at the local SEO landscape of this area, at all the search volumes and value this page might bring. Making location pages for the sake of making location pages does not fit our expert PDCA approach, so we don’t do that and focus only on actions that will bring the most results instead.
